Trustees’ Week 2023
Trustees’ Week 2023, 6-10 November
This is an opportunity to celebrate the people that keep our organisations running and to tempt newbies into the fold!
Every organisation in the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector has a group of people that ensure safe passage for all that climb aboard! They are called Trustees, Directors, Steering Group or Executive Members and many other things – they are all Trustees. What brings them together is the responsibility they share to keep our voluntary sector vibrant, safe and evolving.
This country relies on volunteers in every aspect of community life, from sport and leisure to health and social care. Trustees are people from all walks of life that go that step further, lending their knowledge and experience to overseeing organisations they believe in and grow a real affection for.
During Trustees Week, on social media, on our website and across the Hampshire CVS network, you can look forward to testimonies from active trustees, training opportunities and lots of temptations for prospective trustees! We aim to break the myth that Trusteeship is only open to a select few. The voluntary sector is a vibrant and diverse community and this should be reflected in those who are Trustees.
If you are a Trustee, this is your chance to add to the voices telling us how rewarding your role is and how your community benefits from your volunteering. Go to the RVS social media sites or drop us a line, so we can add it to the celebration!
To get us started, Getting On Board are running a Festival of Trusteeship online courses throughout the week.

The Festival of Trusteeship 2023 is returning with a bang!
It’s a week-long online series of events, during Trustees Week, stuffed with exciting options for people who want to become trustees, trustees who want to keep learning and developing, and for charity leaders who want to understand best practice in trustee recruitment and diversity.
We have a whopping four sessions daily every day for five days, with a mix of webinars, clinics and panel discussions about the topics that matter to trusteeship today.
Four different content strands will cover all aspects of trusteeship: Aspiring Trustees, Trustee Recruitment, Good Governance and Thought Leadership.

Charity Digital ran a webinar about engaging younger generations. It is really interesting to hear the perspective of Ashley Fontaine who presented it. She became a Trustee for a mental health charity last year at the age of 23. You can watch the webinar here and Step 7 is specifically about Young Trustees (19 mins, 23 secs in):
Interestingly Ashley also mentioned the role of ‘young advisors’ which can be a stepping stone towards becoming a trustee:
The Young Trustees Movement – Benefits
As well as useful info on their website, the Young Trustees Movement run free 1-hour online workshops about championing diversity on boards. The next ones are 7th November ’23, 6th December ’23 and 8th January ’24, all at 12 noon: Young Trustees Training tickets

The website has some great guidance about recruiting people with lived experience including a video. It is divided into sections: Promoting the Role; The Hiring Process; Your Trustees First Day; Providing Continued Support

There are lots of examples of Trustee Recruitment Packs online but they tend to be quite wordy. However, we thought that this Scouts one was really appealing, had lots of images and was written in a clear and concise way. We liked the slides about ‘What do Trustees do?’ and ‘Could you be a Trustee?’
