What is Supported Volunteering?
Rushmoor Volunteer Centre believes that volunteering should be open to all, regardless of age, sex, religion, disability, etc. We therefore offer support to individuals, who may have extra needs, in order to find suitable placements. Our Volunteer Placement Officer will take a detailed brief of their requirements, source a suitable opportunity, initiate an introduction and settle the volunteer into the role. She will then make regular follow-up calls or visits to ensure there are no problems.
Many of our supported volunteers are referred by outside agencies; some are self-referring; some have support workers who we will work closely with. Our aim is to find suitable opportunities that will give our clients increased confidence and ultimately improve their prospects of finding paid work.
The Volunteer Gardening Project
Within our supported volunteering programme we run a highly successful gardening project. This operates an allotment where the group grow fruit and vegetables. Participants also carry out one-off gardening projects in the local community for those people who are unable to get their gardens under control due to poor health or disability. We have recently participated in the renovation of Alma Gardens and will be active in its maintenance and the maintenance of other 'green' community areas.
The group meet regularly three times a week and have participated in both horticultural and healthy eating training courses to improve their well-being, skills and prospects.
